How many people have been cured from the coronavirus?

We hear a lot about the number of infections and people who died, but how many people have been cured from the coronavirus?

In order to answer that question, we must first talk about the question: when were you actually cured? According to the World Health Organization WHO  , a person is officially cured if he or she no longer has any complaints and has been tested negative twice for the coronavirus. There should be 24 hours between those two tests.

People with mild or mild complaints are generally better after two weeks. Recovery can take three to six weeks for patients with severe complaints.

Update March 26

Since March 8, a patient is considered cured when he or she has no complaints for 24 hours. People do not have to inform RIVM, the general practitioner or the GGD. Therefore we do not know how many people have been healed.

There are more than 474,000 confirmed infections worldwide. More than 115,000 people have been officially declared cured. In total, more than 21,000 people have died worldwide.

Then the situation in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, according to the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), 265 people are infected with the coronavirus. Three persons died . This concerns an 86-year-old man from Hoeksche Waard, an 86-year-old man in Uden and an 82-year-old man in Sittard / Geleen.

Since March 3, RIVM has published a map in which the infections per municipality are listed. That map is updated every day. But RIVM does not provide data about people who have recovered.

This is different worldwide. Johns Hopkins University maintains a map with real-time data on the number of patients diagnosed with the coronavirus, the number of patients who died, and the number of patients declared healthy.

The map is based on information from the World Health Organization WHO and the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control ECDC. There may be slight differences in the actual numbers.

According to the university's map, 107,443 people had the corona virus at 3 p.m. Most infected people live in China: 80,695 people. After that, South Korea and Iran are the countries with the most infections; 7314 and 6566 respectively. Italy has the most infections in Europe: 5883.

The total number of deaths is 3,646. 2,986 of those people died in China. 233 in Italy, 194 in Iran and 50 in South Korea.

But of course there are also people who are cured from the disease, and there are many more than the number of people who died from it. More than 60,000 people have recovered, most of whom in Hubei Province: 45,222 people. 2134 people have been cured in Iran, 118 in South Korea, 589 in Italy.

In short: we hear a lot about the number of increasing infections and deaths worldwide. But there are also thousands of people cured from the virus. A small nuance in the number of cures: there can be weeks between infection with the virus and the cure. The figures about healing are therefore behind the number of infections.
